Dog Breeds

Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is powerful, confident and deeply loyal, a calm guardian with a silly side at home. Its size and strength mean good manners are not optional: a Rottweiler that pulls, jumps or reacts to other dogs is hard to handle and easy to misjudge. With structured training, a Rottweiler becomes a steady, trustworthy companion.

History of the Rottweiler

The Rottweiler descends from the drover dogs that traveled with Roman armies, herding and guarding the cattle that fed them. In the German market town of Rottweil, butchers used the dogs to drive cattle and pull carts, and the breed took the town's name.

When railroads replaced cattle drives, Rottweilers found new work as police and military dogs in the early 1900s. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1931.

What Rottweilers Excel At

  • Obedience
  • Family companionship
  • Carting and working tasks
  • Calm watchfulness at home

Common gotchas

  • Strength: An adult Rottweiler can easily overpower a handler on leash without training.
  • Wariness: Naturally reserved with strangers; socialization matters.
  • Leaning and herding: Rottweilers push into people and bump to move things.
  • Public perception: Well-mannered Rottweilers change minds; poorly behaved ones confirm fears.

Trainer Notes

  • Start leash manners early and keep them consistent. A heel and an automatic sit when you stop make a big dog easy to walk.
  • Socialize with structure: calm exposure to people, places and other dogs, with clear expectations.
  • We do not train personal protection or teach dogs to be protective. Our goal is a calm, obedient companion.
  • Use the place command to give a large dog a clear job in the house when guests arrive.

FAQs

Will you train my Rottweiler to be protective?

No. We do not offer personal protection or any training that teaches a dog to be aggressive toward people or protective of its family. We specialize in obedience training and proper etiquette for pet dogs.

Do you accept Rottweilers with aggression?

We do not accept dogs with aggression toward humans. Dog-on-dog aggression, resource guarding and other behavior issues may be accepted on a case-by-case basis, so tell us about it when you inquire.

Is there an extra fee for large dogs?

Yes. A $200/month fee applies to dogs over 100 lb, or dogs that need a colossal size crate, so they have plenty of room to rest. Many adult male Rottweilers fall into that range.

At what age should I start training my Rottweiler?

Puppy Camp takes puppies from 4 months of age, and Dog Boot Camp is for dogs 12 months and older. Training a Rottweiler before it reaches full size is much easier.

How long is boot camp for a Rottweiler?

Dog Boot Camp runs 8 or 12 weeks. The 12-week camp adds off-leash heeling, long-distance recalls and field trips into the city.

Train Your Rottweiler at Neuman K-9 Academy

Our Dog Boot Camp is an 8 or 12-week board-and-train program for dogs 12 months and older, and Puppy Boot Camp is for puppies 4 to 12 months. Every program includes hands-on handler training for you at graduation. Families send their dogs from across the country, too; see dog boot camp for out-of-state families.
